About this volume

Getting Strong by Design — From the Determinants of Force to a Complete Program

Maximal Strength Development is Book D3 of The Performance & Human Physiology Encyclopedia — a 93-volume, university-level library on how to turn training science into a program that delivers. It is written for coaches, programmers and athletes writing their own plans: deep enough that a professional already trained in the field keeps learning, structured clearly enough that a motivated reader can follow every step.

How this book is written
  • University level, without dilution. Exact scientific terminology, defined at first use — mechanisms, not just conclusions.
  • Myths tested against the evidence. Where a popular claim does not survive the evidence, the book says so — and shows why.
  • References at the end of every chapter. Sources cited in APA 7 style, plus a master bibliography.
13 chapters · approx. 194 pages · Book D3, Collection D — Program Design & Methodology.

Read an excerpt

From Chapter 1 — Strength Development Overview

"This book applies the program-design framework (D1) to a second major goal: getting strong. Maximal strength — the most force you can produce against a load — is built differently from muscle size. Where hypertrophy is driven by volume across a wide range of loads, strength is driven by intensity and specificity: heavy loads, on the specific lifts, performed with skill. Strength is also more than muscle — it's a trainable skill of the nervous system. This chapter frames the goal, the hierarchy of what matters, and how strength differs from (and complements) size."

Strength underpins athletic performance, resilience against injury, and healthy aging — and it's built by a different emphasis than size. Confusing the two (training for size when you want strength, or vice versa) leaves results on the table. Understanding that strength is intensity- and specificity-driven, that it's a trainable skill, and how it relates to hypertrophy lets you program for it correctly and integrate it with size goals — which is what the rest of the book operationalizes.
