The Central Governor
The Psychology of Effort, Fatigue & Pain
About this volume
The Central Governor is Book N2 of The Performance & Human Physiology Encyclopedia — a 93-volume, university-level library on the human side of coaching — behavior, motivation and professional practice. It is written for coaches, nutritionists and practitioners building a real practice: deep enough that a professional already trained in the field keeps learning, structured clearly enough that a motivated reader can follow every step.
How this book is written
- University level, without dilution. Exact scientific terminology, defined at first use — mechanisms, not just conclusions.
- References at the end of every chapter. Sources cited in APA 7 style, plus a master bibliography.

From Chapter 1 — Effort, Fatigue & Pain Overview
"When you reach the point where you 'can't go on,' what exactly is stopping you? For a century the answer seemed obvious — your muscles have run out, your heart and lungs can't deliver enough oxygen, you've hit a physical ceiling. But a body of evidence now suggests the limit is set, in large part, by the brain: fatigue is less a failure of the muscles than a regulated sensation generated by the mind to protect you. This book explores that idea — honestly, including its fierce scientific debates — and asks the practical question: if the brain sets the limit, how do you push it?"
Understanding what limits endurance — and the brain's central role — changes how you train and perform. If the limit were purely physical, the only lever would be physical training; but if perception of effort and central regulation matter (and the evidence says they do), then mental strategies, beliefs, pacing, and managing perceived effort become powerful, trainable levers for endurance. This book sits between psychology (N1) and physiology (A5/D5), explaining the experience and regulation of effort — and it carries a vital safety message about distinguishing the discomfort of effort from the pain of injury.
