About this volume

Quantifying the Training Dose — From Each Dial to the Complete Prescription

Loading Parameters: Volume, Intensity, Frequency, Density is Book C3 of The Performance & Human Physiology Encyclopedia — a 93-volume, university-level library on the science that decides whether training works. It is written for coaches, personal trainers and athletes who want reasons, not recipes: deep enough that a professional already trained in the field keeps learning, structured clearly enough that a motivated reader can follow every step.

How this book is written
  • University level, without dilution. Exact scientific terminology, defined at first use — mechanisms, not just conclusions.
  • Numbers, formulas, worked examples. Reference ranges, equations and solved calculations you can apply the same day.
  • Myths tested against the evidence. Where a popular claim does not survive the evidence, the book says so — and shows why.
  • References at the end of every chapter. Sources cited in APA 7 style, plus a master bibliography.
13 chapters · approx. 206 pages · Book C3, Collection C — Training Science & Principles.

Read an excerpt

From Chapter 1 — The Loading Parameters as the Training Dose

"Book C1 explained why the body adapts: a sufficient, progressive, specific stimulus, recovered from, drives change. But 'sufficient' and 'progressive' are quantities — and this book is about the numbers. How heavy, how many, how often, how hard, how long between sets: these are the loading parameters, the dials that set the dose of training. Get the dose right and adaptation follows; get it wrong — too little, too much, mismatched to the goal — and effort is wasted. This is the science of the training dose."

Every practical training decision is a loading-parameter decision: how much weight, how many sets and reps, how often, how much rest, how fast, which exercises. These "acute program variables" are the levers a coach or trainee actually pulls, and the difference between a program that works and one that doesn't usually lies in how they are set and progressed. This book quantifies the dose that C1 described in principle, and it underpins exercise execution (C4) and program design (the D collection). Mastering the parameters is what turns the science of adaptation into an actual program.
