Nutrition and Mental Health
Mood, Depression, Stress, and the Emerging Science of Nutritional Psychiatry
About this volume
Nutrition and Mental Health is Book I9 of The Performance & Human Physiology Encyclopedia — a 93-volume, university-level library on food as medicine, applied honestly to a specific condition. It is written for dietitians, health professionals, patients and preventive-minded readers: deep enough that a professional already trained in the field keeps learning, structured clearly enough that a motivated reader can follow every step.
How this book is written
- University level, without dilution. Exact scientific terminology, defined at first use — mechanisms, not just conclusions.
- Myths tested against the evidence. Where a popular claim does not survive the evidence, the book says so — and shows why.
- References at the end of every chapter. Sources cited in APA 7 style, plus a master bibliography.
For general information and education only; not medical advice. Consult a qualified health professional before acting on its content.

From Chapter 1 — The Brain, Mental Health, and Why Nutrition Matters
"The idea that what you eat shapes how you feel is at once ancient folk wisdom and a young, serious science. This book takes the science seriously — and that means refusing two tempting extremes: the dismissive 'food has nothing to do with mental health,' and the irresponsible 'eat this and cure your depression.' The truth is more useful and more humane: nutrition is a real, modifiable influence on mental health — a powerful partner to care, never a replacement for it."
Mental health conditions — depression, anxiety, and others — are among the leading causes of disability worldwide, affecting hundreds of millions of people. They are real, common, serious, and treatable medical conditions. And over the last two decades, a genuine new field — nutritional psychiatry — has emerged, showing that what we eat is one of the modifiable factors that influences mental health, alongside genetics, life circumstances, sleep, activity, relationships, and medical care.
This book is an honest, evidence-based guide to that field: how nutrition relates to mood, depression, anxiety, and stress; the biology that connects the gut, the body, and the brain; what the research genuinely shows (and its limits); and how food fits into a whole-person approach to mental wellbeing.
But because this is a mental-health topic, an important word comes first — and it will recur throughout:
This book is education, not treatment. Nutrition is a complement to mental-health care, never a substitute for it. Depression, anxiety, eating disorders, and other conditions deserve assessment and care from qualified professionals. No food, diet, or supplement cures mental illness, and nothing here should replace therapy, medication, or professional support. If you are in crisis or having thoughts of harming yourself, please reach out immediately — to your local emergency number, a crisis line, or a trusted professional. (This boundary is Book N4 in the library's scope-of-practice framework, and it matters more here than almost anywhere.)
