About this volume

Long-Term Athletic Development — Growing Healthy, Capable Athletes

Young Athletes is Book M2 of The Performance & Human Physiology Encyclopedia — a 93-volume, university-level library on how training and nutrition must change for a specific population. It is written for coaches and clinicians serving women, youth, older adults and clinical populations: deep enough that a professional already trained in the field keeps learning, structured clearly enough that a motivated reader can follow every step.

How this book is written
  • University level, without dilution. Exact scientific terminology, defined at first use — mechanisms, not just conclusions.
  • Myths tested against the evidence. Where a popular claim does not survive the evidence, the book says so — and shows why.
  • References at the end of every chapter. Sources cited in APA 7 style, plus a master bibliography.
13 chapters · approx. 142 pages · Book M2, Collection M — Special Populations & the Life Cycle.

From Chapter 1 — Young Athletes: Why Children Are Not Miniature Adults

"The most important sentence in youth sport is also the most ignored: a child is not a small adult. A young athlete is a growing, maturing, developing person whose body and mind are changing month to month — and who deserves a developmental approach built for who they are now, not a shrunken copy of an elite adult's programme. Get this right, and you build a healthy, capable athlete for life. Get it wrong, and you risk injury, burnout, and a child who quits the sport they loved."

Youth sport is one of the most common — and most consequential — settings in which the science of training, nutrition, and physiology is applied. Yet it is also where that science is most often distorted: by parents and coaches who mean well but apply adult logic to children, by a commercial system that sells early specialization and "talent development," and by persistent myths (that strength training stunts growth, that there are make-or-break "windows" of trainability, that more is always better).

This book is for everyone who shapes a young athlete's development — parents, coaches, physical-education teachers, the young athletes themselves, and the clinicians and practitioners who support them. As with every book in this series, it is inclusive: you do not need to be a professional coach to use it. And it is built on a single foundational idea, developed across thirteen chapters.

🔑 Key Concept — the foundational idea. Children and adolescents are not miniature adults. They are growing and maturing organisms whose physical, physiological, and psychological characteristics differ from adults' — and differ from each other depending on their stage of maturation. Effective youth athletic development is therefore developmentally appropriate: matched to the young person's growth, maturity, and needs — prioritizing physical literacy, enjoyment, diversification, and long-term development over short-term results and premature specialization.
