About this volume

EMG & EMS Demystified — What They Measure, What They Stimulate, and What the Evidence Says

Electromyography & Electrical Stimulation is Book B7 of The Performance & Human Physiology Encyclopedia — a 93-volume, university-level library on how the body produces, transmits and controls movement. It is written for coaches, strength athletes, physiotherapists and kinesiology students: deep enough that a professional already trained in the field keeps learning, structured clearly enough that a motivated reader can follow every step.

How this book is written
  • University level, without dilution. Exact scientific terminology, defined at first use — mechanisms, not just conclusions.
  • Myths tested against the evidence. Where a popular claim does not survive the evidence, the book says so — and shows why.
  • References at the end of every chapter. Sources cited in APA 7 style, plus a master bibliography.
13 chapters · approx. 140 pages · Book B7, Collection B — Anatomy, Biomechanics & Kinesiology.

Read an excerpt

From Chapter 1 — EMG & EMS: What They Are and Why They're Confused

"Two technologies, three letters apart, and endlessly mixed up. One listens to the electrical chatter your muscles produce when you move it; the other sends electricity in to make them contract. EMG measures; EMS stimulates. Both are real, useful tools — and both are routinely oversold, the first as a verdict on 'the best exercise,' the second as a shortcut to a six-pack. This book keeps them straight, and keeps the science honest in both directions."

EMG and EMS are among the most misunderstood tools in fitness and rehab. They sound alike, often use similar-looking electrodes, and get conflated — yet one is a measurement device and the other a treatment/stimulation device. Confusing them (and over-trusting either) leads to bad training decisions ("this exercise activates the muscle most, so it's best") and wasted money or harm ("ab belts melt fat"). This opening chapter draws the clean line the rest of the book builds on (Book N4).
